A vinyl plank flooring calculator works out how many boxes of luxury vinyl plank (LVP) or rigid SPC to buy for a room. Enter the room size and box coverage and it adds waste for cuts.

Vinyl plank is popular because it's waterproof and mostly clicks together — great for kitchens, baths and basements. Some SPC has a pad attached; otherwise a thin LVP underlayment helps with sound and minor subfloor imperfections.

How it is calculated

Boxes = area divided by box coverage, times one plus the waste, rounded up. We default to 8% waste because rigid vinyl planks produce less offcut loss than wood. Skip separate underlayment if the SPC has an attached pad; otherwise size it to the floor area.

Set the coverage per box (LVP boxes are often ~24–30 sq ft).
Allow about 8% waste — rigid planks cut cleanly with less offcut loss.
Add LVP underlayment unless your planks have a pad pre-attached.

Worked example

A 15 × 12 ft room (180 sq ft) with 30 sq ft boxes and 8% waste needs 7 boxes.

How much vinyl plank do I need?

Floor area divided by the box coverage, plus about 8% waste. The calculator rounds up.

Is vinyl plank waterproof?

Most LVP and all SPC are waterproof, which is why they suit kitchens, bathrooms and basements.

Does LVP need underlayment?

Only if it isn't pre-attached. Many SPC planks include a pad; for the rest, a thin LVP underlayment helps sound and smooths small subfloor flaws.
