A hardwood flooring calculator works out how many bundles of solid or engineered wood flooring to buy for a room. Enter the room size and bundle coverage and it adds a generous waste allowance, because real wood needs more.

Hardwood is graded and varies plank to plank, so you cull and 'rack' boards for colour as you go — which wastes more than a uniform laminate. We default to a higher allowance and remind you to acclimate the wood in the room first.

How it is calculated

Bundles = area divided by bundle coverage, times one plus the waste, rounded up. We default to 12% waste — higher than laminate or vinyl — because solid and engineered wood is graded and you discard cull boards while racking for colour. Solid wood nails to a wood subfloor; engineered can also be glued or floated.

Why more waste than laminate?

Natural wood varies in colour and grain, so you cull and arrange boards as you lay them, which wastes more than uniform planks.

Solid or engineered?

Solid wood is all wood and can be re-sanded many times; engineered has a real-wood top over plywood, is more stable over concrete and basements, and can sometimes float.

Do I need to acclimate it?

Yes — let the wood sit in the room for several days so its moisture matches the space, or it can gap or cup after installation.
