Square Yards Calculator

A square yards calculator converts an area into square yards — the unit carpet is sold in, and a common one for concrete, turf and fabric — and also shows square feet and square metres. Enter dimensions or an area you already have and it does the division.

It saves the error-prone step of dividing square feet by 9 in your head, and adds a 10% waste figure for carpet so you order the right amount off the roll.

How it is calculated

Square yards = square feet ÷ 9 (since a yard is 3 feet, a square yard is 9 square feet). Area entered in square metres is converted at 1 m² = 10.764 ft². For carpet, add about 10% for seams and cuts off the roll width.

Steps

  1. Enter the length and width, or an area you already know.
  2. Read the square yards (square feet ÷ 9).
  3. See the square metres for metric quotes.
  4. Add the 10% waste figure for carpet.
  5. Take the result to your carpet or material supplier.

Worked example

A 15 × 12 ft room is 180 square feet — exactly 20 square yards (22 with 10% waste for carpet).

Common questions

How many square feet in a square yard?
Nine — a square yard is 3 ft × 3 ft. So divide square feet by 9 to get square yards.
Why is carpet sold by the square yard?
It's the long-standing trade unit for carpet off 12 ft rolls; many flooring and concrete quotes use it too.
How do I convert square yards to square metres?
Multiply square yards by about 0.836. The calculator shows square metres alongside.
Should I add waste?
For carpet, yes — about 10% for seams and cuts. For a plain area conversion, no waste is needed.
