How it is calculated

Square yards = square feet ÷ 9 (since a yard is 3 feet, a square yard is 9 square feet). Area entered in square metres is converted at 1 m² = 10.764 ft². For carpet, add about 10% for seams and cuts off the roll width.

How many square feet in a square yard?

Nine — a square yard is 3 ft × 3 ft. So divide square feet by 9 to get square yards.

Why is carpet sold by the square yard?

It's the long-standing trade unit for carpet off 12 ft rolls; many flooring and concrete quotes use it too.

How do I convert square yards to square metres?

Multiply square yards by about 0.836. The calculator shows square metres alongside.

Should I add waste?

For carpet, yes — about 10% for seams and cuts. For a plain area conversion, no waste is needed.
