Exact material estimates for every home & DIY project.

Flooring Cost Calculator

A flooring cost calculator estimates what a new floor will actually cost — materials and labour together — not just how many boxes to buy. Enter the room size, the price per square foot of your flooring, and a labour rate (or zero if you're doing it yourself), and it returns a total with a clear breakdown.

It's built for budgeting and comparing quotes: change the material price to compare laminate against hardwood, or drop labour to zero to see the DIY saving. A waste allowance is included so the materials line is realistic.

How it is calculated

Materials = area × (1 + waste) × price per square foot; labour = area × labour rate; total is the sum. Costs are in whatever currency you enter your prices in. Trims, transitions and underlayment aren't included in the base figure — budget a little extra for them.

Steps

  1. Enter the room size, or a total area.
  2. Enter the material price per square foot (from the product page or a quote).
  3. Enter a labour rate per square foot, or 0 for DIY.
  4. Leave 10% waste, or raise it for diagonal or patterned layouts.
  5. Read the total and the per-square-foot cost; adjust prices to compare options.

Worked example

A 200 sq ft room at $3.50/sq ft material (+10% waste) and $2.00/sq ft labour comes to about $1,170 — roughly $5.85 per square foot installed.

Common questions

How much does flooring cost to install?
It depends on material and labour rates, which is why this calculator takes both. As a rough guide, installed laminate and vinyl often land a few dollars per square foot; hardwood is higher.
Does the estimate include underlayment and trim?
No — it covers the flooring material plus labour. Add 5-10% for underlayment, transitions and trim, or use the flooring calculator for the underlayment quantity.
How do I compare DIY vs hiring out?
Run it once with your labour rate and once with labour at 0; the difference is roughly what you'd save doing it yourself (before tool costs).
What waste allowance should I use?
10% for a straight lay, up to 15-20% for diagonal or herringbone patterns or rooms with many cuts.
