Brick Calculator

A brick calculator works out how many bricks your wall needs and the mortar to lay them. It uses standard modular bricks at about seven per square foot of single-wythe wall (the brick plus its mortar joint), and adds waste for cuts and breakage.

How it is calculated

A standard modular brick with a 3/8 in joint covers about one-seventh of a square foot, so you need roughly 7 bricks per square foot of single-wythe wall. We add 10% waste and estimate mortar at about one 80 lb bag per 35 bricks.

Common questions

How many bricks per square foot?

About 7 modular bricks per square foot of single-wythe wall, including the mortar joint. Double it for a two-wythe wall.

How much mortar for brick?

Roughly one 80 lb bag per 30-40 bricks with standard joints. The calculator gives the bag count.

Why 10% waste for brick?

Cuts at corners and openings, the odd broken brick, and spares for repairs. Keep a few from the same batch.

What is single vs double wythe?

A wythe is one brick thickness. Veneers are single-wythe; structural walls may be double — multiply the count accordingly.
