A backsplash tile calculator works out how many tiles — or mosaic sheets — you need for a kitchen or bathroom backsplash. Enter the run length and the height from the countertop to the cabinets, and it adds waste for cuts around outlets and the ends.

Backsplashes are small, quick jobs, so the main thing is not under-buying: order a little extra from the same lot so a future outlet swap or repair matches. Mosaic tiles come on mesh sheets and are calculated the same way.

How it is calculated

Tiles (or sheets) = backsplash area divided by the tile/sheet area, times one plus the waste, rounded up. The standard backsplash height is the gap between the countertop and the upper cabinets, usually around 18 inches. Outlets need cuts, so 10% waste is sensible.

Enter the height to the underside of the cabinets — about 18 inches is typical.
Enter your tile or mosaic-sheet size.
Allow 10% waste for cuts around outlets and corners.
Order from one lot and keep a spare sheet.

Worked example

A 10 ft run, 18 in high, is 15 sq ft. With 12 × 12 in tiles and 10% waste, you'd buy about 17 tiles.

Common questions

How do I measure for a backsplash?

Multiply the run length by the height to the cabinets (about 18 in). For an L-shaped kitchen, add each run together.

How many mosaic sheets do I need?

Divide your backsplash area by the coverage of one sheet, then add 10%. The calculator does this if you enter the sheet size.

Do I tile behind the stove or outlets?

Usually yes behind the stove; outlets get cut around (and their covers sit over the tile). Allow waste for those cuts.

Thinset or mastic for a backsplash?

Pre-mixed mastic is convenient for dry walls; use thinset for larger or heavier tile and anywhere that may get wet.
