How it is calculated

Volume = area × compacted thickness. Tons = volume (ft³) × 145 lb/ft³ ÷ 2000 — hot-mix asphalt averages about 145 lb per compacted cubic foot, roughly 2 tons per cubic yard. Mix design and aggregate change the density slightly, so treat it as an ordering estimate.
